Pith to Bark is a journey from middle to outer; from heart to skin. It’s a place where objects are designed and made, focused in the material of wood, to introduce, illuminate and remind us of what we are a part of and what we share it with.

Pith to Bark was born at 10,000 feet on an off-the-grid permaculture farm in southwest Colorado. Artist, Gavin Tougher, found himself there after four years of art school, while eager to find a greater understanding and connection with the natural world and the phenomena it encompasses. On this land sat piles of old lumber, undisturbed and holding much potential. Through learning the systems of permaculture, Gavin was inspired to create a symbiotic relationship between this material, art, ecology, function and aesthetics. In this pursuit, Pith to Bark was created to bring this connection to you.

Currently based in Corvallis, Oregon.

Early spring. The sweet spot.
My friend handed me an old Canon Canonet, unsure if it still worked.
The first blue sky, and the swallows swoop back in. Purple lilac next to the door, and the cherry tree blooms again.
Drove to shasta. The redwoods. Sun
It’s a heavy lineup north of Oregon this summer. I know every bump, crack and curve from here to Seattle!
Hope Spring is treating you well. Beep beep!
Hello! I’m Gavin, the artist and woodworker behind the studio Pith to Bark, and I’m excited to join in this year’s @nwmarineartworks Open Studios.

Pith to Bark began with a fallen branch and forgotten wood. Ubiquitous, overlooked.

Place is in wood grain, in the palm of our hands, in the way light moves through space. It sits on windowsills and in cupholders, in the sound of wind through that one tree, in the way our hands learn the shape of something familiar. Place is memory.
